It was hoof trimming time for the alpacas at Fe Fi Faux Farm again. It went much better this time. I think everyone is getting the hang of the whole process, even though no one really likes it.
I have had a few people ask me what an alpaca hoof is like so I thought I would take a couple pictures. In the first photo, my husband is trimming the hard hoof part at the front of the foot. There is also a close up of the foot in the second photo.
As you can see, an alpaca hoof has two toes, which have a hard toenail and a pad. The pad is much like a dog's pad, only it is larger and not as rough. This helps the alpaca be less damaging to the pasture than a horse or a cow which have hard hooves. It also helps an alpaca to be more sure-footed on difficult terrain. My favorite aspect of this foot type, however, is that it makes their kicks not hurt so much!
